Echoes of Silence
Poster Design for a Documentary Film on the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh War
Project Overview
Echoes of Silence is a documentary film exploring the human cost, memory, and aftermath of the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war. Brainbox was commissioned to design the official poster artwork for the film—an image that needed to communicate gravity, loss, and reflection without sensationalism.
The objective was to create a visual language that speaks quietly but powerfully, allowing the subject matter to resonate emotionally and intellectually.
The Challenge
Designing for a documentary about war presents unique responsibilities. The poster needed to:
Respect the seriousness of the subject
Avoid propaganda or graphic imagery
Communicate emotional weight through symbolism
Work across print, protest spaces, festivals, and urban environments
Remain visually strong without relying on shock
The design had to evoke reflection, not spectacle.
Concept & Visual Direction
The poster concept centers around layered human silhouettes, overlapping and facing opposite directions. This visual metaphor represents:
Displacement and divided histories
Echoes of voices left unheard
Memory, loss, and absence
A restrained but emotionally charged color palette was used to create contrast and depth without overwhelming the viewer. Typography was kept bold and minimal to ensure clarity and impact from a distance.
The result is a poster that feels quiet, heavy, and unresolved—mirroring the reality of the conflict it represents.
Typography & Composition
Typography plays a critical role in the poster’s effectiveness:
Strong, condensed lettering ensures readability in public spaces
Minimal text keeps focus on the visual message
Balanced composition allows the poster to function across different formats
The design maintains its integrity whether displayed as a hand-held protest poster, a gallery print, or large-scale urban advertising.
Real-World Applications
The poster was designed to perform consistently across:
Street posters and public demonstrations
Film festival materials
Print publications
Outdoor advertising placements
Its simplicity and clarity allow it to adapt naturally to different environments without losing meaning.
Result
The final poster for Echoes of Silence delivers a powerful visual statement through restraint and symbolism.
The project achieved:
A respectful and emotionally resonant design
Strong visibility in public and urban contexts
A timeless, non-sensational visual language
A poster that supports the documentary’s message rather than overpowering it
This case study demonstrates how thoughtful graphic design can give voice to difficult subjects through clarity, symbolism, and restraint.
